This dashboard project is supported by the Ford Foundation and the Steady App.Īt a time when America’s economic outlook is uncertain, the nation’s unemployment insurance (UI) system currently is unprepared to handle another recession.TCF’s new Unemployment Insurance and Racial Equity Explorer illustrates major racial differences in UI benefits among ten states with the largest Black population share, four are in the bottom ten in terms of their UI benefit’s wage replacement rate.Even for workers lucky enough to collect assistance, benefits currently only replace 39 percent of prior wages, down from 79 percent a year ago, when federal benefits supplemented state payouts.After reaching three out of four jobless workers during the pandemic, the nation’s system of unemployment benefits began to fail, with the percentage of jobless workers that received benefits falling to a near-record low of 26.8 percent in August 2022. ![]()
